Surviving Home Invasion
A Growing Criminal Trend
You hear about it on the local news. Armed thieves have burst into a home, attacked the owners, and stolen everything of value.
These 'home invasions' are one of the most disturbing criminal trends of the last decade. They leave most of us wondering what we can do to protect our families and ourselves from such aggressive and often violent criminals.
Harden Your Home
Preventive measures offer one of the most effective strategies for reducing your chances of becoming a home invasion victim. Steps like these also have the added benefit of enhancing your overall security.
- Install solid doors and strong locks on all exterior entries.
- Keep doors, windows, and garage doors secure at all times.
- Beef up exterior locks with reinforced strike plates and three-inch screws.
- Install a wide-angle peephole in exterior doors. And never open your door to strangers.
- Call 911 if strangers act suspicious or won?t leave.
- Keep your security system turned on when you are home.
Plan for the Worst
Security experts advise that it's difficult to know in advance how to respond to a home invasion. But they do seem to agree that a home security plan can increase your chances of surviving this extremely dangerous situation. Here are some suggestions for measures you should incorporate into your own plan.
- Get the most out of 911. Program the 911 emergency number on a direct-dial button on each phone you own (including your cell). You may only have a second to call. If you make contact, don't hang up. If possible use the speakerphone mode so police can hear what is going on in your house.
